The combination of Australia keeping their chances of qualification alive thanks to Max Purcell and Mathew Ebden’s critical victory in the doubles final against France.
Adrian Mannarino’s win over Purcell (7-6 (4) and 6-4) in the first match forced last year’s finalist Alex de Minaur to trust all their options, as a loss would leaving them out of the tournament.
In a life or death duel, De Minaur defeated Ugo Humbert (7-6 (2) and 6-3) and caused the tie to be decided in doubles; If Australia win, it will survive the group stage, if France do it, it will almost be in the final stage in Malaga of Davis cup.
And Purcell and Ebden did not disappoint. The winners of last year’s Wimbledon, as they did against Great Britain, won the doubles, this time against the pair formed by Nicolás Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vaseelin (7-5and 6 -3) and allowed Lleyton Hewitt’s team with a shooting classification. To do so, they need to beat Stan Wawrinka’s Swiss team this Saturday.
The Swiss, who lost to France 3-0 on the opening day, face Great Britain on Friday, while the Gauls play against Switzerland on Sunday. The best two in the group will advance to the final tournament to be played in Malaga in November.
