The Nordic countries are thinking about creating their own league, an alternative competition to their respective national championships. The viking league‘, which does not yet have an official name, is coming soon and will consist of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Finland. This was announced by Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Association, at an elite women’s football seminar, according to ‘Football Channel’.
The aim is for none of these countries to be left behind as the Champions League is getting bigger and more competitive and some teams from the Nordic countries have struggled to qualify. “I hope that we Nordics will protect our history and not just look to the future. That is why it is exciting to follow Sweden during the World Cup, to have proof that it is possible to strengthen the Nordic model,” said Klaveness.
“We want to create a Nordic league or do something together to get an advantage in the context of the competition. We need to commercialize Nordic football and have higher margins so that salaries in the north are higher and the best players choose here. We shouldn’t see money as something bad, or elite football as bad,” he added.
