The world number 1 suffered a lot to beat Britain’s Katie Boulter 7-5, 7-6(2)while both Pegula (4) and Garcia (9) had to reach the third set.
The American came back from a close first set to finish off Russian Anna Blinkova 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1.while the Frenchwoman complicated the match she controlled until halfway through the second set against Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 3-6, 6-3).
Things were worse for Daria Kasatkina and Ons Jabeur. The Russian was overcome by the aggressive tennis of the Chinese Xinyu Wang (6-4, 6-2), while the Tunisian was unable to react in her match against the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (7-6(5), 6-1).
For the rest of the day, it’s worth highlighting Coco Gauff’s matches against Petra Marticby Iga Swiatek against Varvara Gracheva and by Maria Sakkari against Linda Fruhvirtova.
