To the former coach of England Kevin Keegan (72) does not like women commenting on television about the matches of the English national team coached by Gareth Southgate. He believes that a woman is not suitable for this kind of work. He says this and he knows that his words will cause a stir.
In an evening talk in Bristol, before an audience of around 250, Keegan made it clear: “I’m not too enthusiastic about that, I have to be honest, and it might not be an opinion that everyone shares. I don’t like to listen when the girls talk about the English team during a match because I don’t think it’s the same experience. That’s my problem.
Jill Scott, Karen Carney and Alex Scott are three of the most prominent men’s soccer commentators. Keegan softened his argument: “With the performers we have now, some women are as good or even better than the men. It’s a good moment for them. But when I hear an English player of soccer saying something about England vs Scotland at Wembley and saying, ‘If I was in that position, I’d do it,’ doesn’t seem like that either. I don’t think there’s that much overlap.”
He then explained an experience that best shaped his opinion of women’s football in general: “When I was coach of England, I once coached the women in England. They were better than I thought they would be. He got the ball and one of them hit me, which hurt me a lot,” he joked.
