The US government is now once again deporting migrants to Venezuela. This affects people who have crossed the US border illegally (see video above). Venezuela has been in a serious crisis for years. Millions of residents have left the country due to poverty and violence.
Just a few weeks ago, US President Joe Biden granted temporary protection status to hundreds of thousands of people from Venezuela. This gives them, among other things, the opportunity to work. However, on Thursday the US government announced it would resume deportations of migrants to Venezuela. The deportation flights to the South American country should start immediately.
On Thursday, Biden also had to defend himself because more and more border barriers were being built at the southern border of the US under his administration. His Republican predecessor Donald Trump wanted to build a ‘beautiful wall’ at the approximately 3,200 kilometer long southern border to keep out undocumented immigrants and criminals. Democrats then accused Trump of pursuing an inhumane isolation policy.
Biden: Border walls aren’t working
Biden now emphasized that he does not believe such border walls would work. However, the White House made clear that funds for planned construction work in the Rio Grande Valley were approved before Biden’s term in office. The president tried to reappoint it, but Congress rejected it. Now the law specifies that the money must be used to build a wall, the White House spokeswoman said.
Arrest warrant for opposition leader Juan Guaidó
Venezuela’s Public Prosecution Service has requested an arrest warrant for opposition politician Juan Guaidó. The 40-year-old is under investigation for “alleged treason, usurpation of positions, nepotism or embezzlement of money, securities or public property and money laundering”. Recently, Venezuelan opposition politician María Corina Machado was excluded from the presidential elections. She was accused of alleged irregularities from her time as an MP.
