The Italian cyclist Elia Viviani (INEOS Grenadiers) The sprint was awarded the first stage of the Tour of Guangxi, a route of 135.6 kilometers spread over three laps of a circuit located in the Chinese city of Beihai.
It took only fifteen kilometers to form the first breakaway of the day, a group consisting of the French Louis Barre (Arkéa-Samsic), the Israeli Omer Goldstein (Israel Premier-Tech), the Belgian Dries De Bondt (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and the Danish Frederik Wandahl (Bora-Hansgrohe).
They were joined with 64 kilometers left by a compatriot of the latter, JUlius Johansen (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), but his effort to connect was in vain as four kilometers later a mechanical problem took him away from the lead and sent him back to rejoin the peloton.
The other members of the getaway also went there, before the others was Barré. In this way, with sixteen kilometers to go, everything was put together and work began in the various teams to prepare for the arrival of the sprinters.
The Italian went for victory Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious), but also surpassed by the transalpine Viviani. Behind them, Irish Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), Belgian Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny) and Dutch Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) completed the top-5.
