The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) suspended all football activities in the country on Wednesday until further notice in solidarity with the Palestinian people and in protest of the “massacres of indescribable barbarism by the Zionist entity”, in reference to the attack against a hospital in the Gaza Strip.
“Expressing its solidarity with the Palestinian fighting brothers and in honor of the memory of the honorable and glorious martyrs of the brutal Zionist attacks carried out in Gaza against the populations of occupied Palestine, the Algerian decided Football Federation to suspend all competitions and football matches until further notice,” the organization explained in a statement.
An explosion at a hospital in Gaza caused at least 500 deaths, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied responsibility for his military and blamed the armed wing of the Islamist movement Hamas, referring to them as “barbaric terrorists,” for a failed rocket launch.
Algeria will host matches in Palestine
Last Sunday the FAF announced that, at the request of the Palestinian Football Federation, will host all his team’s matches in the qualifying stages of the 2026 World Cup and the 2027 Asian Cup in addition to managing organizational costs.
The first match is scheduled for November 21 against Australia, in the 2026 World Cup qualifying phase, although the city chosen to host this event has not yet been announced. Palestine is in group 1 with Australia, Lebanon and Bangladesh.
The national team of Palestine, known as the Lions of Canaan, was created in 1928 and is currently ranked 97th in the FIFA ranking.
