Novak Djokovic will appear this Monday at number one in the ATP world ranking with a 2,420 point lead Carlos Alcarazwho discounted 180 as a quarterfinalist in the Basel 2023 tournament, which he did not defend in this edition by withdrawing “due to a problem with the plantar fascia of my left foot and muscle fatigue in the lumbar area of my back.”
Djokovic has 11,045 points, compared to Alcaraz’s 8,625. However, both know that they should subtract 2,100 and 180, respectively, to make the accounts more true.
Without the 600 points from Paris and the 1,500 from the ATP Finals collected in 2022, Djokovic is left with 8,945. Subtracting 180 in the Paris 2022 quarterfinals, Alcaraz dropped to 8,445. This will be left on Monday, November 6.
Between one (8,945) and one (8,445), 500 points, which is the advantage with which Djokovic reached the final events of Paris-Bercy (October 30-November 5) and the ATP Finals in Turin, from November 12 to 19.
This week, in the capital of France, Carlos Alcaraz has two mathematical options to lead Djokovicalthough none of them depends on himself: being the champion and the Serbian did not reach the final, being the finalist and the Balkan did not reach the quarterfinals.
It’s a tricky combination, though not impossible considering Djokovic hasn’t competed since September and Alcaraz has been out for almost three weeks. As the draw was so tough, with rivals still looking for a place in the Final Masters.
Two of them are classified, the Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev and the Italian Jannik Sinner. Greek almost has a ticket to eight ‘masters’ Stefanos Tsitsipas. The German seeks to maintain his position Alexander Zverev and the danish Holger Runethreatened especially by the Polish Hubert Hurkacz and the American Taylor Fritz.
In Turin there will be 1,500 points for the unbeaten champion, Djokovic’s condition in 2022. There are 200 for each victory in the three stage group matches, 400 more for winning a semifinal and an extra 500 for the champion in the final.
