Fernando Diniz, the psychologist who bets on football-art

Date:

Fernando Diniztechnician of Fluminense and interim coach of Brazilis one of the most praised coaches in the country for his innovative character and his option for football-art, but he does not have any important title that gives value to his proposition.

This condition may change next Saturday, when Fluminense play Boca Juniors the title of Copa Libertadores 2023in a single-match final at the Maracaná stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The title will allow the coach who was born 49 years ago, in the small and conservative city of Mine Ducks and trained in psychology, include in his resume a feat that will show that offensive and daring football, criticized by the most practical, also achieves results.

The ‘Flu’ coach has an offensive and daring style, he likes to control the ball and surround the opponent with passes to open up space for the forwards, to the point that his admirers have coined the term “Dinizismo” .

That was the term FIFA used to congratulate him in July, when he was simultaneously named Brazil’s interim coach until 2024, when the Italian’s arrival is expected. Carlo Ancelotti.

“Dinizismo in Brazilian football. The time has come for football-art. Good luck in that mission,” FIFA published on the official profile of the 2026 World Cup on social networks.

Important titles are empty

Despite his praised style, Diniz has lacked expressive titles since he began his career as a coach at the head of the unknown Votingin 2009, a year after hanging up his boots as a midfielder.

His most important title is a regional tournament, the Carioca Championship, won this year with Fluminense. Previously, he was champion of the third division of the Paulista Championship at the command of Votoraty (2009) and of the Paulista Cup at the head of that group (2009) and also of the Paulista club (2010).

And there was no shortage of opportunities because in 2016, when his work began to be recognized, he reached the final of the Paulista Championship as coach of Audax, then lost to Santos.

After his time at Audax, Diniz jumped to the first division as the commander of clubs with tradition and teams with options for titles, such as Athletico Paranaense, São Paulo and Santos, but he was fired from all of them due to lack of results.

In 2021, he was appointed coach of Vasco da Gama with the mission of removing the club from the second division, which he did not achieve. Despite that failure, in 2022 he was accepted by Fluminense, with whom he was having the best moments of his career.

Diniz, who divides the fans in two between those who spare no praise to praise him and those who strongly doubt his ability to show results, also created divisions when he was named as the Brazilian coach .

Irregular selection start

His results at Canarinha seem to prove the critics right.

They have two wins, one draw and one defeat in four matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, in which they have scored four goals. His predecessor, Tite, collected 24 wins, 5 draws and no defeats in 29 qualifying matches for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, with Brazil conceding just eight goals.

He arrived at the national team after being considered the best coach in Brazil for leading Fluminense to third place in the 2022 League, guaranteeing him a place in the Copa Libertadores.

They also won the Carioca Championship with a victory over Flamengo.

Also for taking Fluminense to the Libertadores final with the best campaign this year, where they even beat the mighty River Plate, Boca Juniors’ bitterest rivals, 5-1 at the Maracaná.
