Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, world number 3, and Tunisian Ons Jabeur (10) withdrew due to injury and illness, respectively, in their quarterfinal matches at the Berlin tournament, leading to the qualification of Russian Anna Kalinskaya (24) and the American Coco Gauff (2).
Sabalenka was trailing 5-1 when she decided to leave. At the change of sides at 4-1 he requested medical help to treat his neck and shoulder.
It was the first withdrawal from a match in Sabalenka’s entire career, the WTA reported.
In the case of Jabeur, a two-time Wimbledon finalist in 2022 and 2023, he suffered an illness that caused him to give up the match against Gauff when the North American won the first set 7-6 (9).
Gauff will face compatriot Jessica Pegula or Czech Katerina Siniakova in the semifinals and Kalinskaya will face former world number one Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus.
