“Wild Thang,” an eight-year-old Pekingese, has been named the winner of this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog competition. This year, eight dogs participated in the competition, which took place as part of the 2024 Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Most of them were rescued from animal shelters before finding new families.
On the fifth attempt it worked: Pekingese “Wild Thang” can now call itself “Ugliest Dog in the World” for a year.
His appearance is due to distemper he contracted when he was a puppy. As a result, his tongue did not hang out, his teeth could not grow and a muscle disease also developed, reports the BBC.
The World’s Ugliest Dog contest has been around for nearly 50 years and “celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique,” according to the contest’s website.
$3000 prize money
Herrl and G’scherl are offering 3,000 dollars (about 2,800 euros) in prize money. “Rome” competed for second place (see photo show). The blind and toothless “Daisy May” also secured a place on stage.
“I thought she was going to be the most beautiful ugly dog, but it turns out other people don’t see the beauty in her that I see,” said the owner of “Daisy May.”

The annual competition emphasizes the importance of adopting animals. It’s also not about making fun of ‘ugly’ dogs, but about ‘having fun with some beautiful characters and showing the world that these dogs really are beautiful’.
