After joining UEFA with Groupe Amaury (magazine owner France Football and the newspaper L’Équipe) to co-organize the Ballon d’Or awards starting in 2024, the awards for the best male and female players of UEFAas well as the best coach, lose.
The UEFA announced this Friday that it will co-organize the annual gala of golden ball and will sell its rights worldwide, while adding two new awards to the existing ones: for the best male and female coach of the year.
Although the UEFA awards will not be given for the best male and female playersor the best coach, the body that governs European football will continue to deliver President’s Award (which recognizes merits that transcend sport), as well as awards for the best player in each of UEFA’s own competitions. Miroslav Klose received the 2023 President’s Award.
Last monday Leo Messi won the eighth golden ball of his career and the Barcelona player and world champion with Spain Aitana Bonmati achieved the Women’s Ballon d’Or. Aitana was elected UEFA Player of 2022-23 and Erling Haaland, Best player. The Barcelona player and the ‘citizen’ are the last winners of these awards.
In the men’s section, the record for UEFA Best Player awards is held by Cristiano Ronaldo (4, for 3 Leo Messi). And. in the women’s category, those selected as UEFA Players are another Barcelona player, Alexia Putellasand the Danish Bayern Pernille Harderon 2 occasions each.
