Brazil’s veteran defender Marcelo rated the title of Libertadores Cup what did he gain from it? Fluminense as the most important of his career, ahead of the Champions League trophies he won at Real Madrid.

The Brazilian team won the first CONMEBOL South American club title for the first time in its history after defeating Argentina’s Boca Juniors 2-1 in extra time.

The 35-year-old defender not only won five Champions Leagues in his 16 seasons at Real Madrid, but also six Liga titles, five Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups and two Copas del Rey. In total, he was on the winning side in 18 of the 21 club-level finals in which he played.

Marcelo, who started the final and was substituted at half-time, returned to his boyhood club in February after a spell at Greek side Olympiakos following his departure from the Madrid club.

“Real Madrid will understand. This is my most important title at club level, because this is the club that raised me,” Marcelo told ESPN. “I won a very important title with my favorite club, the club that gave me all the tools to develop my career, with employees who saw me grow. There is nothing more satisfying than that. It is priceless,” he added.

Winning the Copa Libertadores and the Champions League meant Marcelo joined a group of 15 players, including Ronaldinho, Neymar and Julián Álvarez, to win both intercontinental club tournaments. “I owe Fluminense. It is written that we will win the championship,” he said.
