The world athletics council approved the change in competition format for Paris 2024 GamesAccording to there will be a repechage for all individual track events between 200 and 1,500 meters, including the hurdles.
Under this innovation, athletes who fail to qualify for spots in the first heat will have a second chance to progress to the semi-finals via a play-off round.
So this replaces the previous system where athletes progressed through the rounds by placing (Q) and the best times in the ‘eliminated’ (q).
These tests will have four rounds, first, repechage, semifinals and final. Schedules will vary depending on the specific nature of the race and each athlete will compete in at least two events at the Games.
As in the 100 meters there are preliminary heats before the first round, no repechage will be introduced.
The president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, explained that “after consulting” with various parties, including the athletes, they believe that “this is a change that will facilitate the development of these events for the athletes and generate interest for fans. and journalists”.
“The repechage rounds will give our sport more exposure during the Olympic season and are carefully timed to ensure that each event on our Olympic program retains its share of the spotlight.”
The Council also approved the entry conditions for the 10,000 meters, marathon, combined trials and walking at the Budapest’23 World Championships, which will be held from August 19 to 27 next year.
The minimum of 10,000 will be 27:10.00 for men and 30:40.00 for women; in a marathon of 2h09:40/2h28:00; in the decathlon 8,460; in the heptathlon 6,480; in the 20 kilometer march of 1:20:10/1:29:20; and at 35 km by 2h29:40/2h51:30.
The ‘qualifying window is set for 10,000, 20km walks and combined events between January 31, 2022 and July 30, 2023; for the marathon and 35 km walk between December 1, 2021 and May 30, 2023; and in other tests between July 31, 2022 and July 30, 2023.
In the 10,000 meters the best eight in the cross classification who did not get a classification will get their World Cup ticket; while the first five of the platinum level marathons run in the marked period will also have it, as will the winners of the gold levels held in 2023.
