The United States Forest Service has been launched an emergency plan for the protection of the giant sequoia against fire hazard.
The emergency approval marks the start of the removing shrubs and other trees smaller ones that can feed the fires. Likewise, the plan also includes the use of controlled fires to reduce the forest mass of the forests.
Most of the 70 giant sequoia forests are concentrated in Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, and Yosemite National Park. The latter has been damaged by the severe fires that ravage Mariposa County, California.
The fires of the last two years killed 20% of the country’s giant sequoias.
The news did not please everyone, as environmental groups argue that the plan is “a well-orchestrated public relations campaign that benefits the timber industry”.
