Flight cancellations expected – Lufthansa calls on union to strike warning

Date:

Next Wednesday (July 27), passengers from German AUA parent company Lufthansa will have to prepare for more flight cancellations and delays. In ongoing wage negotiations for some 20,000 ground workers, the Verdi union has called for a one-day warning strike. The ground staff includes technicians and logistics staff, without whose services the aircraft cannot take off.

Verdi had rejected an initial tariff offer from Lufthansa but agreed to continue negotiations for August 3 and 4. According to union information, the company had offered fixed compensation and a performance-related component for a period of 18 months during the negotiations.

Profit for lower wage groups
The union, on the other hand, is demanding 9.5 percent more money in the wage tables for a period of twelve months. With a duration of twelve months, especially the lower wage groups should benefit. The salary increase must be at least 350 euros and in addition, all hourly wages must deviate significantly from the statutory minimum wage, which will increase to 12 euros per hour in October.

Considering overtime, high inflation and a three-year pay cut, hefty wage increases are warranted, negotiator Christine Behle said. She is Vice-Chairman of Verdi and also Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Lufthansa. The situation at the airports is escalating, Behle said.

Staff shortages, inflation and wage cuts
The overload of employees due to a significant staff shortage, high inflation and a three-year wage cut would put more and more pressure on employees.

The warning strikes will begin on Wednesday, July 27 at 3:45 a.m. and will last until Thursday, July 28 at 6 a.m.
