Trial in Graz – stabbed with scissors: life imprisonment for perpetrators

Date:

Because he is suspected of the murder of a 41-year-old woman, a 24-year-old Romanian will appear before the criminal court in Graz on Tuesday. The man confesses to the crime. He killed the woman with a large number of scissors in February last year before setting fire to the victim’s apartment. Shortly after his arrest, he was under investigation for another murder in Zurich. Sentence: life imprisonment.

After the fire in the apartment of the 41-year-old from Graz on February 7 last year, there were suspicions that the fire was set to possibly cover up a murder. The woman found dead in the apartment had multiple stab wounds on her body. A day and a half later, the 24-year-old Romanian was also arrested.

The Romanian’s motive was misogyny
He allegedly spent the night before the fire with the woman and then killed her. Incriminating traces were also found on his clothing. The young man confessed to the first interrogation. His motive: “misogyny”. A short time later, another body was found in Zurich. In custody, the man also confessed to having committed this murder.

Prosecutor warns against bad photos
On Tuesday, however, the matter will only be negotiated in the capital of Styria. The Swiss authorities will conduct their own trial against the man. Prosecutor Eva Pachernigg warned the jury at the beginning of the trial: “It was a very terrible act. They are faced with human abysses and bad images.” The results of the investigation are clear, she had no doubts about the guilt of the suspect.

Wife invited him to her apartment
During the trial, the accused continued to confess: he answered all questions calmly and without emotion. He had not known the woman before. She asked him on the evening of February 6, 2022 at Graz main station if he would buy her cigarettes and alcohol. He did and she invited him to her apartment.

The 24-year-old explained that he had consensual sex with the woman, but she fell asleep afterwards: “I was upset because she fell asleep. I tried to wake her up.” When that failed, he suddenly wanted to kill her. He looked for a knife, found a pair of scissors and stabbed him until he lost his strength, he said during the interrogations. The prosecutor spoke of a “real overkill”.

The coroner said the victim was stabbed dozens of times. Death occurred from hemorrhage, the expert said. Given the serious injuries, she said a “huge effort” from the perpetrator was necessary.

The verdict came in the early afternoon: life imprisonment! He was also admitted to a forensic therapeutic center. The verdict is not final.
