Despite the blistering heat, cooling off in the New Danube has been difficult lately. The reason for this is a new usury plant that creates a green carpet of aquatic plants. In the end, the mowing boats were unable to contain the algae infestation. They have been back in action since Monday morning.
Algae as far as the eye can see. The aggressive aquatic plant has recently ruined the Danube islanders’ bathing pleasure – we reported. Many wondered when the city would finally do something about it.
Now it’s time. At the insistence of the “Krone”, the mowing boats regained speed on Monday morning. A local inspection saw three boats busy removing large amounts of plants from the water.
“Since this morning, we have been back in action with six mowing boats on the section south of the Steinspurbrücke, a distance of about 800 meters. Our employees do their best to guarantee Vienna’s swimming pleasure in the natural waters,” says Gerald Loew, head of the Viennese waters (MA 45).
Fast growth
But that is not everything. Because the curling pond grows ten (!) centimeters a day! According to the office of Alderman Ulli Sima (SPÖ), the work will take approximately two weeks.
And then one can only hope that undisturbed swimming in the New Danube will be possible before the end of summer.
