Observant witnesses alerted the emergency services in Vienna’s inner city on Sunday night after a young woman fell completely drunk into the Danube Canal in freezing cold.
The dangerous fall into the water happened at 3:45 am in the area of the Kaiserbadschleuse between Franz-Josefs-Kai and Obere Donaustrasse. According to police, she was very drunk and under the influence of drugs at the time.
Totally chilled
The police managed to secure the woman in the Danube Canal with a life buoy on a ledge of the lock. A police boat was then able to safely bring the woman back ashore. Divers from the fire service have secured the area of operations.
The young woman was completely hypothermic and was taken to hospital with suspected alcohol and drug abuse. In addition to the water police, agents from the city police commands of the inner city, Landstrasse and the Vienna standby unit were also deployed.
