Athletic won convincingly in their debut cup match against Granada at Los Cármenes. The lions, who were clearly superior to their rivals in many phases of the match, also broke their particular jinx away from Lezama by signing their first victory of the season away from home. It wasn’t all good news for the Bilbao team, as Nahikari had to go off injured nine minutes before half-time.
The Guipuzcoan striker was responsible for opening the scoring in the early stages of the match by taking advantage of a beautiful cross from Elexpuru, one of the great highlights of the night. The visitors continued to have chances against the goal that Andrea Romero defended after the 0-1 score. Roger Lamesa, despite the bad results and clear rival dominance, chose to keep his team with a clear intensive withdrawal. Her only shot between the three sticks consisted of a shot from Laura Pérez into the hands of Quiñones.
The injury to Nahikari, who was replaced by Jone Amezaga in the 36th minute, was the most notable note until half-time. The local coach took advantage of the intermission to make a quadruple change. Granada seems to move forward with the simultaneous integration of Alicia, Ari Mingueza, Lucía and Naima.
The first chances of the second half, however, were also visitors; but Jone Amezaga and Azkona failed to finish between three sticks. Granada then decided to press the attack and managed to level the contest with a shot from the newly incorporated Naima. Quiñones avoided a 2-1 score moments later after a fantastic save from Esther’s shot.
The lions, once they regained control of the situation, continued to persevere against the Nasrid team until they took the lead again with a great goal from Pinedo. The local coach, far from giving up the tie, decided to put Etna on the attack. David Aznar’s response translated into Bibi’s return, since the end of April, as a left-back ahead of Nerea Nevado. His first action earned him a yellow card.
Jone Amezaga, once again in control of the clash, left his signature with a trademark goal and Elexpuru, with a breath to spare, capped off his fine performance with the final and definitive goal for Bilbao. The lions have advanced to the Cup and they know what it means to win away from home.
