They say they have to fight the mold in the apartment. In reality, they are brazen thieves and plunderers. Several victims in Linz have already fallen for the trick and have now lost their jewelry and money. Extreme caution is advised and do not allow unappointed professionals into the house!
A 90-year-old living on Lüfteneggerstrasse in Linz discovered too late that the craftsmen were actually thieves. Someone came, rang the bell and said he had been asked to take measurements of the mold growth. The pensioner confidently let him into the apartment. She did not notice another perpetrator coming through the unlocked door of the apartment behind him. He searched the property and stole jewelry and cash, causing tens of thousands of euros in damage. The theft was only noticed and reported the next day.
Jewelry box gone
A similar incident occurred briefly in Linzer Salzburger Straße. The 65-year-old complainant stated that a professional came to her. He explained that he had to check the walls because of mold. The woman and the handyman then went to the bathroom. About ten minutes later the man left the apartment again. Shortly afterwards, the 65-year-old noticed that a jewelry box had been stolen from her. She was certain a second man entered the apartment while the repairman distracted her.
Now the police are sounding the alarm and warning: don’t let anyone into your apartment whom you do not know or have summoned yourself. If in doubt, call the emergency number immediately.
