The German was climbing with two compatriots in the area of the Zwerchenwand in Nesselwängle on Friday afternoon when a stone the size of a football suddenly fell down. The 26-year-old was hit directly in the head. He suffered serious injuries.

The climber was eventually rescued from the wall by a rescue helicopter crew and flown to the Garmisch Clinic in Bavaria.
