Friday was a day of mixed emotions for André Onana. On the one hand, the African Football Confederation announced that the Cameroonian is, with the Moroccan Yassine Bounou and the Senegalese Édouard Mendy (Al Ahli Jeddah)one of three finalists for the continent’s best goalkeeper award in 2023.
But his nomination was overshadowed by the injury he suffered in the Cameroon-Mauritius match (3-0) on the first day of group D qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Onana had to retire ten minutes from time of the match due to adductor problems after the stoppage.
There is no news from the Cameroonian team about Onana’s condition and it is unclear if he will be able to travel with the expedition to Libya, where on Tuesday the ‘indomitable lions’ will play their second qualifying match in Benghazi.
If the injury is confirmed, it will be a serious inconvenience for Manchester United, whose coach, Erik ten Haagthere is only Turkishor Altay Bayindir, signed in September from Fenerbahçe, and is a veteran himself Tom Heaton 37 years old, as replacements in his team.
Continuation in the Champions League, at stake
After the national team break, United risk their continuation in the Champions League and, with just three points from four games played, will only have a chance of qualifying if they at least draw against Galatasaray in Istanbul on November 29.
