Carlos Sainz finished 6th in the F1 Las Vegas GP after a race that started badly for his interests and a weekend that was completely complicated on the first day, when he crashed into a manhole cover. There was one of the best cars to fight for pole and victory in Las Vegasa route where you can fight head-on Verstappen. But a penalty of 10 positions for the grid this Sunday for a battery change due to the damage caused by the accident against that sewer, something that is the fault of F1 and the FIA and not Sainzmade his choices go out the window.
Sainz went from being able to start in 2nd, to having to do it from 12th position. He tried to continue the attack from the beginning, starting by placing the exit inside. There was scattered Sepiolite, a white powder that was placed on the track to clean up the oil spilled from the parade car in which Lewis Hamilton was riding. According to Carlos, the dust that accumulated on his tires took away much of the grip on the already difficult Las Vegas terrain, with very little grip for everyone.
“The first lap was a bit of a lottery with cold tires. And then, with the oil patches that was on the inside of turn 1. There was something like a white product that we all picked up coming in and we got to turn 1 and were blocked. It’s something to look at. Because going through the oil fields with cars that left all the oil there an hour before the race is something we have to improve for the future. It was difficult to start with cold tires and such a complicated Turn 1, but from there, headed down, good return, limiting the damage and went from second to last to sixth. So it wasn’t bad,” said Carlos Sainz on ‘DAZN F1’.
After that difficult start, a ‘Safety Car’ due to Russell pressing Verstappen gave him wings in the fight for the points. And he completed his comeback with 6th place in a race finale where the pace the two Ferraris lost on hard tires stood out compared to how fast they were on the medium.
“With hard tires we are always difficult. Now there was grain in the front and rear… if you don’t have grain in the front you have grain in the back. “It was a very difficult race with very difficult tires for us.”he added.
SAINZ’S PREDICTION AT THE FIRST LAS VEGAS GP
“That straight is pretty long. We got to the end of the straight very quickly and on cold tires there were moments when on cold tires you didn’t know if the car would stop, it wouldn’t stop… and then when you warmed up the tires it was fine. For me there is a corner, which is 11-12, where Lando (Norris) crashed, which is quite dangerous that maybe for the future we have to recalibrate a little. The rest, a circuit more for racing than classification.
