Fernando Alonso is leaving a mark in its first season on Aston Martin. The performance of the Asturian driver allowed him to have an important role despite the fact that the F1 World Cup was almost monopolized for another season by the superiority of red bull and the dutch Max Verstappen.
Alonso is currently in 5th place overall with 200 points, the same as his compatriot from Ferrari Carlos Sainz and 127 more than his companion, Lance Strollingwho was 10th overall with 73 points.
Those responsible for Aston Martin have expressed more than once the importance of having Fernando for the development of the car, but this Friday in Abu Dhabi the team leader, Mike Crackhas publicly stated in a press conference that Aston Martin is interested in extending Alonso’s contract beyond 2024, when the Spanish driver will be 43 years old.
“I don’t think I have to answer that question. Absolutely, yes,” Krack said when asked if he wanted to keep Alonso for the team.
“As a team, we were impressed with him from day one until today. At first I thought it was a honeymoon month, but I’m very happy that we managed to extend that honeymoon,” added the Aston Martin boss.
“I think we received an exceptional team driver, helpful all the time, especially when things are difficult,” insisted Mike Krack.
Alonso, two-time F1 world champion included renault (2005, 2006), said on Thursday that this season was the best since 2012, when he drove for Ferrari and fought for the title with Sebastian Vettel and his Red Bull.
The Spanish driver has been on the podium eight times this year, including third place in the first three races of the World Championship and second place in Monaco, Canada and Netherlands.
