The next time the lions reappear in front of their fans in San Mamés, Athletic will take the occasion to hold closing events commemorating their 125th anniversary. This special day, scheduled for the 16th of this month, will begin with an event in tribute to Iribar at the esplanade of San Mamés, continue with the league clash against Atlético de Madrid and eventually will include another series of events, a match of old glory between Athletic and Porto included, right inside the stadium.
Programming, like it or not, has its risks. Normalcy until the ball starts rolling in front of the colchoneros and worry about what might happen when the duty referee blows the final whistle of a league match. Having a win is not the same as losing or tying the game. All of this also assumes that time cooperates.
The attempt to combine the past, present and even the future of a club with a unique and centuries-old philosophy in one day and even under the same framework remains there. Some have questioned the staging of the event with Iribar, Urrutia, Guerrero, Goiko and Susaeta among the guests. Some are there and many others are missing, logically; but it’s not about egos, but about Athletic.
