First the good news: Munich Airport, which is also used by many Austrians, partially resumed operations at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning. A video shows how chaotic the situation was at the ‘Franz Josef Strauss’ airport due to the snow masses.
Huge amounts of snow have fallen from the sky in and around the Bavarian capital Munich since Friday. The “Franz Josef Strauß” airport in the northeast of the city was particularly affected. There were already flight cancellations on Friday and the airport had to be completely closed to flight operations on Saturday morning. A video showing just how dramatic the situation was showed a private jet overturned under the mass of snow.
“Put his ass on”
At the request of the Munich TZ, Henner Euting, the airport’s main press spokesperson, confirmed the authenticity of the video. The event took place on Saturday evening.
“The heavy snowfall caused the plane to tilt,” says Euting. “The fire brigade then straightened and stabilized it.” The plane was no ordinary plane, it was a private business plane.
Flight operations are only starting up again very slowly
The situation has now relaxed somewhat and the airport has been open again since Sunday at 6 a.m. However, we are still far from normal business operations: “Air traffic restrictions will continue to apply. We therefore recommend that travelers flying today contact their airline well in advance about the status of their flight before traveling to the airport,” the airport homepage reads. Until now (as of 9 a.m.) only a few planes were able to take off from Munich.
