Premier League makes history: Rebecca Welch to take charge of Fulham-Burnley

Date:

The Premier League has decided to break barriers and for the first time in its history a female referee will officiate a match in England’s top division.

Howard Webbthe president of PGMOL (Referee Association of England) confirmed that. Rebecca Welch will be in charge of refereeing the Premier League match between Fulham and Burnley on December 23.

Welch This isn’t the first time it’s been in the news this season. It was only in November that she became the first female referee involved in a Premier League match when she was the fourth official in another Fulham match, this time against Manchester United also at Craven Cottage, making her debut.

This referee, 40 years old, began his career in 2010 while working as an administrator in the NHS, only to start making a living from refereeing in 2019. This will not be the first obstacle Welch, who previously managed Harrogate Town -Port, Ligue Two worth it in 2021, although now the jump is brutal.

The Premier has a black referee again

The only thing new at Welch is not. The last time the Premier League had a black referee was in 2008, when Uriah Rennie retired. However, this is set to change as Sam Allison takes charge of the match between Sheffield United and Luton on December 26.

In 2020, Allison became the first black referee in the four major divisions of English football, and earlier this year, along with Welch, he became a Premier League referee.

The English Federation (FA) itself has already announced a commitment for a net increase of 1,000 female referees and 1,000 black or Asian referees in the system over the next three years, which equates to 50%.
