the right side Lucy Bronze believe that the experience of England winning a grand final at last year’s Euros could prove crucial in Sunday’s World Cup decider against a Spain as you know well Bronze lost in the World Cup semi-finals to England in 2015 and 2019, but was a key part of the Lionesses team that beat Germany to win their first major Euro title last year.
The 31-year-old Barca player was once again a rock in defense on Wednesday as England beat co-hosts Australia 3-1 to reach their first World Cup final.
“We’re up against a team that I personally know very well,” Bronze told reporters after the game. “We know how to win finals. That’s something Spain doesn’t have and we have. That’s an experience not just me, but many of these England players…”.
“I’m excited. I’m very good friends with a couple of them, my Barcelona teammates Keira (Walsh) and I know them very well. We’ve been talking about it throughout the tournament and even before the tournament started we were joking saying, ‘See you in the final.’ And it came true.”
England required a huge defensive effort and were forced to come from a goal down to beat Spain after extra time in last year’s Euro Cup quarter-final. Although he entered the World Cup as one of the favourites, he faced it without his key players due to injuries and then lost one of his best players, Lauren James, to suspension after seeing red card in his match against Nigeria.
The ability to overcome setbacks, is key
Bronze said England’s resilience in the face of such setbacks would also be a plus at Stadium Australia on Sunday. “The strength of this team is that we stick together, we have an incredibly close bond, we have a very tight-knit team,” he said. “Winning the last Euro gave us a lot of confidence, but we suffered some losses this year in terms of good players, there was a lot of noise abroad and that brought us closer.”
“Before the tournament, people saw that we were eliminated in the group stage or something like that, and now we are in the final,” he recalled.
