Christian Eriksen sent a message of support to Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer who suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday during a Premier League match at Bournemouth.
The Danish player, who is currently in the ranks of Manchester United, went through the horrific experience in June 2001 while playing a Euro Cup match with his team against Finland at the Parken in Copenhagen. Eight months later, he returned to playing after being given a defibrillator.
“Well, first of all, I hope he’s okay,” Eriksen told BetFred. “I’ve read and seen what happened and I hope he’s okay, that he takes his time, that he’s healthy and that his family is there to support him. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’s okay.”
The advice
Based on his experience, Eriksen feels qualified to testify that “my advice to him is to make the best possible decision. To listen to the doctors and if they tell him that maybe he should do something else, respect that.”
“There’s nothing stopping you, but in the end it all depends on how he feels and what the doctors say. He has to make the decision with his family about what’s to come, but he has to take his time and focus on himself.”
Bournemouth-Luton were suspended in the 65th minute at 1-1 after Lockyer collapsed on the pitch. The Welsh centre-back, 29 years old, experienced a similar incident in May during the Premier League promotion playoff final against Coventry at Wembley and then underwent surgery to correct atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm), before being given the green light to resume his playing career.
