Dortmund sank into depression

Date:

Borussia Dortmund reached the Christmas break unable to get out of its slump for several weeks and went deeper with another defeat, against Mainz (1-1), who after the break had won and held the victory.

The setback could be even greater for Edin Terzic’s team, which after showing itself better in the first part of the rivalry, lost in the return from the locker room. Borussia Dortmund will take the point as they have gone four games without a win – three draws and one defeat – and have managed to win just one of their last eight games.

This is a relevant match for Borussia Dortmund, who are losing sight of the top part of the Bundesliga, the Champions League zone. Resigned from the title race for a few weeks, he is now six points behind Leipzig, third, and four points behind Stuttgart, who have not played a match in sixteen days, against Augsburg .

The image of Terzic’s painting was damaged especially in the second half. Because at first he was more than a needy rival who started the session on the downswing and shamelessly went for a major victory.

The home side were rewarded for their stormy start, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens sending a shot against the crossbar after eight minutes and taking the lead on the half-hour with Julian Brandt’s perfectly executed free-kick.

Dortmund were unstoppable as they scored their second with a Marcel Sabitzer shot again hitting the post.

Dortmund didn’t take their chances and paid for it. Mainz found its moment and, at a corner, on the edge of halftime, leveled the scores. It was a corner kick that Marco Richter took too long, on the other side of the field. Philipp Mwene was there to cross the area where Dutchman Sepp Van den Berg came out to take the ball into the net.

The goal sunk Borussia Dortmund and they were gone. Because with the exception of the last minutes, when, in desperation, he lunged at his rival in the corner, Mainz was close to victory.

Philipp Mwene, Marco Richter and Merveille Papela seriously threatened Gregor Kobel’s goal. In the final moments, with ten players due to the injury of the Ivorian Sebastien Haller, they sought victory. Giovanni Reyna scored, but it was disallowed for offside.
