If there is one dominator on the ATP circuit at the moment, it is, without a doubt, Novak Djokovic. The Serbian achieved the feat of adding more than 400 weeks as world number 1 after closing a 2023 in which he added three Grand Slams (Australian Open, Roland Garros and US Open) to reach 24 in total.
Because of this exhibition, more and more people consider it the best in historysurpassing Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer with whom he has had to share the spotlight for the past nearly 20 years.
The Spanish and Swiss cast a very long shadow, something Nole doesn’t always handle well. This is something that veteran colleagues like Jo-Wilfried Tsongawho gave his opinion in an interview on the ‘Génération Do It Yourself’ podcast.
“Why do some people hate Djokovic? Because I think there was a period when he didn’t like himself, he wanted to be Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal.. Maybe he should have continued himself all the time” explained the Frenchman, who did not hesitate to praise the world number 1.
“He doesn’t do things for appreciation, he does things because he wants to do them that way. We get a lot when we are ourselves. For a moment he wanted to get rid of that image of a warrior that he had, he had experienced various things in his youth, so he was indeed a warrior! I should have assumed that from the start. He would have been appreciated more, he would have been loved for that, like gladiators,” said the Frenchman about the Serbian tennis player, winner of three Grand Slams this past season.
Djokovic will close the year in an exhibition match in Saudi Arabia on December 27 against Carlos Alcaraz on the occasion of the Riyadh Season Tennis Cup, which includes sporting events, but also other cultural disciplines.
The scheduled start time for the pregame of the clash between Alcaraz and Djokovic is 16:00 Spanish peninsular time.
The match will be broadcast live in Spain on DAZNwhich will manage the exclusive production and broadcast of the Tennis Cup worldwide, after reaching an agreement with the organizer.
