It is becoming increasingly common to see footballers speaking out about mental health issues, something that was taboo until recently. The last to do it was Jan Vertonghenone of the best centre-backs in the Premier League of the 21st century and was surprised to say that he suffered some problems after a head injury.
This coincided with an accidental collision with his rear ally and friend Toby Alderweireldwhich left him with a concussion in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.
Vertonghennow on Anderlecht, explained that in 2020 he played for several months with dizziness and headaches and now clarified that he suffered from mental health problems at the time that caused him to experience that situation. “I went to almost every specialist, but I didn’t find an explanation,” he explained on the Mid Mid podcast, making sure that “I can’t go to a restaurant. I tried it once and had to leave after 10 minutes. I can’t stand people”.
“I’ll sleep anywhere during that time. I feel like there’s more and I keep talking about it. “Now I’m convinced it’s a psychological problem.”clarified the Belgian, who when seeing images from that time says that “I immediately saw that something was wrong. That my eyes were different. I was often depressed.”
