Brazil ends the year without a president or coach

Date:

Brazilian football closes 2023 without a proper president for the governing body of sports discipline and without a regular coach after the recruitment failure Carlo Ancelotti.

Real Madrid’s announcement on Friday of Ancelotti’s renewal not only frustrated the intention of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to sign the Italian coach, but also exacerbated the sporting and administrative crisis the entity was going through.

Ancelotti, just agreed

Ancelotti’s arrival in mid-2024 and taking over as coach, position temporarily held by Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz, was championed by Ednaldo Rodrigues, who was separated from the CBF presidency by court order.

Last July, with Diniz’s presentation as interim coach, Rodrigues considers Ancelotti’s arrival certain to assume the ‘canarinha’ starting at the 2024 Copa América in the United States.

“He will be there. You can be sure,” the leader told reporters on that occasion, but without clarifying whether the parties had signed a pre-contract.

From his statement, Rodrigues downplayed that fact Ancelotti has always denied the alleged verbal agreement with the CBF.

Ancelotti, there is no consensus

The announcement of this supposed agreement did not unite fans, journalists and football figures, who defended the name of a national coach.

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaand the senator and former soccer player Romario They are some of those who raised their voice against the arrival of the Italian and came out in defense of local coaches like Diniz or Dorival Júnior, from São Paulo.

In response to questions from journalists, Rodrigues confirmed in July that if the signing of Ancelotti did not go through, he had a ‘plan B’ with names in mind such as the Portuguese. Abel Ferreira, from champions Palmeiras, and Jorge Jesús, from Saudi Al-Hilal, and Diniz himself.

The ‘canarinha’, in a bad moment

Added to the lack of meaning about a proprietary coach is the team’s irregular campaign, which He has gone four games without winning the South American qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup.

Brazil, after drawing at home with Venezuela (0-0) and suffering defeats against Uruguay (2-0), Colombia (2-1) and Argentina (0-1), occupy the sixth place in the league cwith seven pointseight behind the leaders, Argentina, in one of its worst campaigns.

That situation puts Diniz continuing on a tightrope to take the position, despite the unprecedented title for Fluminense achieved in the Copa Libertadores and the fact that he was not pointed out as the only person responsible for the sports crisis.

CBF matches

But the crisis in Brazilian football goes beyond sports. The justice rejected an agreement with the regional prosecutor’s office that would have allowed Rodrigues to present himself in 2022 as the sole candidate for a four-year term, when the laws stipulated that in that case the candidacy corresponds to the oldest vice president.

The decision of December 7 ordered the appointment as auditor of José Perdiz, president of the Court of Sports Justice of Rio de Janeiro, and the holding of a new one election within 30 days to definitively replace Rodrigues.

FIFA and the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) They have expressed through a letter their concern with the open crisis to the governing body of Brazilian football and the appointment of Perdiz as controller.
