Sito Alonso is still with UCAM “because they know me here, love me and respect me”

“It was very easy to come to an agreement because I am so close to the club,” said the Madrid coach after his extension until 2023.

Sito Alonso is happy. A few days after renewing his contract as coach of the UCAM Murcia Basketball Club for another season, he appeared beaming in the press room of the Palacio de Deportes de Murcia yesterday to say that his continuity with the club stems from a commitment that goes beyond sports objectives set by the entity in the ACB League. “We created a feeling that I couldn’t forget,” the Madrid coach said in his appearance to the media.

“It was very easy to come to an agreement because I am so well identified in a place where they know me, love me and respect me. This has been decisive for me to stay in Murcia,” explains Alonso, who is entering his fifth season at the age of 46 with the club, arriving in January 2019.

Last season, he led the university team to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and with him at the helm, fought to the very end to gain entry to the league title play-offs. He finished tenth with a record of 16 wins and 18 losses and a triumph remaining from that other goal. In the past few days, the Murcian team has ruined the great year they had made and didn’t get an award they deserved.

“I’ve been with the ACB for 15 seasons and it’s been a special year, where the team has played basketball to make people enjoy it and what’s so hard to achieve, you can’t pass up. We’ve generated a feeling that you can’t should be forgotten and what happened this year should be our new starting point,” Alonso emphasized.

The university team coach emphasized “the ambition to get better and keep growing” and appreciated “all the good this squad has done”. Looking ahead to the next campaign, he stated that he “wants players with packs to withstand the pressure”, knowing they will play the League and the FIBA Champions League, the third most important continental club competition. The Murcians want to go far in this European competition.

Sito Alonso was accompanied by the general manager of the entity, Alejandro Gómez, his main supporter. “Sito’s intent to continue in this war is that of someone who radiates super-positive energy. He didn’t go to the market because he had no idea but to continue here with his degree of identification and he is more than just a coach for us,” recalled Gomez.

As for the squad composition, next season’s UCAM will show more changes than the only two that have occurred in the campaign that has just ended compared to the previous one. On a contract stand Bellas, Davis, McFadden, Radovic and Lima. Rojas will renew, albeit with a presumably lower weight in the rotation. And there you can close the renovations chapter. Taylor, Cate and Malmanis leave the varsity ensemble. The first addition to the UCAM 22-23 is Travis Trice, an American point guard from Wroclaw, Poland, with whom he shone in the Euro Cup this year, scoring nearly 15 points per game.
