A judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil ordered this Thursday the return of Ednaldo Rodrigues as president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), opening a new chapter in a case that has rocked Brazilian football. Judge Gilmar Mendes’ preliminary ruling overturns a previous decision that removed the first black president of the Brazilian Football Confederation.
“I hereby suspend the effects of the sentence handed down by the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro and order the immediate reinstatement of the leadership elected by the general meeting of the CBF on March 23, 2022,” the judge wrote Mendes in his sentence, which must still be passed in its entirety to the 11-member Supreme Court.
This decision for the first time, issued on December 7, took the Brazilian football authorities into a storm, adding to the poor results in sports of the national team and the failed attempt to appoint Carlo Ancelotti, coach of Real Madrid, in the position of coach.
The Rio court decision nullified a previous agreement between the CBF and the Rio prosecutor’s office, from March 2022, which allowed the election of Ednaldo Rodrigues as head of the federation until 2026. But FIFA and the South did not American Football Confederation (Conmebol) look closely at this judicial decision.
A Conmebol source indicated on Christmas Day that the world soccer body and the South American Confederation will not allow any state interference in the management of federations and will not hesitate to suspend Brazil if Rodrigues is not returned to his duties. duty
