Two cars stopped – smugglers seized: refugees in the trunk

Date:

Carinthian border guards removed two smuggling vehicles from traffic in just twenty minutes: in Bad Eisenkappel a total of nine illegal immigrants were in a Polish car, and at the border of the Karawanken Tunnel a Ukrainian driver had five undocumented Syrians in the car.

The officers were surprised when they stopped a car with Polish license plates in the municipality of Bad Eisenkappel and took a closer look: in addition to the 39-year-old driver at the wheel and her partner on the passenger seat (36), a total of five people did not have a valid entry documents took a backseat. But that wasn’t all.

Four other “stowaways” were crammed into the trunk. The citizenship of the illegally transported passengers is still unknown – and will be clarified during interrogation by immigration police in Klagenfurt. But one thing is certain: the Polish couple’s handcuffs were still there due to suspected smuggling.

License plates as camouflage
Only about twenty minutes after this arrest, officials at the border crossing in the Karawanken Tunnel found “what they were looking for”: a Ukrainian wanted to enter Austria in a car with a Czech license plate – probably hoping not to be checked. The plan failed and the 30-year-old was exposed as a suspected smuggler.

Police found a total of five Syrian citizens without valid documents in his vehicle. The men (aged 22 to 47) who had traveled illegally were arrested under immigration law, but all immediately applied for asylum. The Ukrainian driver was initially taken to jail on suspicion of smuggling.
