Seven days of mourning for Mario Zagallo

Date:

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) this Saturday ordered seven days of mourning in the football world for the death of Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo, “one of the country’s greatest legends”, has died at 92 years old. “The CBF and Brazilian football mourn the death of one of its greatest legends, Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo. The CBF expresses its solidarity with the family and fans in these moments of pain due to the departure of our football idol ,” said the president of the entity, Ednaldo Rodrigueson a note.

The death of the only four-time world champion, as a player, coach and national team coordinator, became known in the early hours of this Saturday through the social networks of the award-winning former soccer player. The cause of death was not reported in the obituary.

The CBF has ordered “seven days of mourning” in Brazilian football “in tribute to the memory of the eternal champion” and is committed to “respecting his legacy.” He also ordered a minute’s silence to be observed in all matches of the first round of the Northeast Cup qualifiers, a tournament that brings together teams from that region of the country and starts this Saturday. Only Zagallo has four world titles on his record: two as a player (Sweden 1958 and Chile 1962), another as a coach (Mexico 1970) and the last one as coordinator of Canarinha (United States 1994).

A urinary and respiratory infection

His health had deteriorated in recent years due to a respiratory and another urinary tract infection for which he was hospitalized for nearly three weeks in August last year. “A faithful father, a loving grandfather, a loving father-in-law, a loyal friend, a successful professional and a great man. A giant idol. A patriot who leaves us a legacy of great conquests, ” the obituary stated.

Zagallo’s farewell comes almost a year after the death of Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pelé’, who died on December 29, 2022 from multiple organ failure as a result of colon cancer. Zagallo with ‘O Rei’ celebrated world titles in Sweden 1958 and Chile 1962, both as players, and in Mexico 1970, with ‘Old Wolf’ as coach.
