Because they no longer dared to go further in the snow, the mountain rescue service in the Schwaz region (Tyrol) had to rescue two 17-year-old holidaymakers. Their nerves were probably playing tricks on them at an altitude of 1,700 meters.
Overconfidence, poor travel planning – these were the ingredients for an emergency situation in the Alps late Thursday afternoon in the Karwendel above Schwaz. Fortunately, the “adventure” ended happily for the young German women.
The two holidaymakers had left Schwaz in the morning towards Vomper Joch or Hirschkopf.
Girls sounded the alarm
“We don’t know exactly where they went, but they certainly didn’t dare go forward or backward on a steeper climb at about 1,700 meters in the snow. That’s why they sounded the alarm around 3:30 p.m.,” said Michael Müllner, head of operations at the Schwaz mountain rescue service.
Eight mountain rescuers then drove the emergency vehicle to Bärenrast and further to the so-called Ochsenhag. “We had to cover the remaining 350 meters of altitude on foot in the snow,” says Müllner. The mountain rescuers reached the German duo around 5 p.m. Müllner: “The two of them were sitting unharmed in the snow in the open space.”
Emergency services set up a safety rope and helped the stranded people over the short, steep section. They then escorted the 17-year-olds to the car in the dark, with which they took the Germans to their accommodation in Schwaz.
Both well equipped
“They were well rested and good on foot. “It’s probably just the nerves that fool them,” says Müllner. In any case, they were visibly ashamed that the young people were ‘stuck’.
