David Castera, director of the Dakar, has created a great new thing for this edition of the toughest race in the world: the 48-hour marathon stage, a day with almost 600 kilometers in the middle of the ‘Empty Quarter’ , in the largest sand desert in the world. world, 100% dunes, which the Dakar caravan pilots have to finish in two days. Depending on the kilometers they can travel on the first day until the deadline indicated by the organization, each pilot has to go to the nearest camp.
7 small camps with the basics
To do this, the organization set up 7 small bivouacs with minimal services, very different from the typical Dakar bivouac. In each of these camps, the drivers will receive what is important to spend the night before going out on the track this Friday morning to compete in the second part of the special 6 and reach the finish line of this stage. Competitors received military-style food rations, a tent, a sleeping bag and had to live in the open, in the middle of the desert, in a location where… there was no toilet! So anyone who needs to go to the bathroom needs to wake up as much as they can.
In the case of Carlos Sainz, he stayed in bivouac D, a camp where Dakar shared a video of the dinner on Thursday. The organization has been repeating for months that competitors will have military rations for dinner. The aforementioned video shows how some employees of the organization cook that perhaps famous ‘ration’. Whereas, for example, Al-Attiyah, Ekström and Chicherit were the only occupants of the vehicles that reached Camp E.
Next to the tents, all vehicles are parked in an area demarcated by the organization. Cars cannot receive mechanical assistance from teams. Moreover, in this bivouac there is only a small tent as a medical center, an organization helicopter and a small area where competitors can access water bottles.
That the pilots sleep in a tent is not new and last year it was done in the marathon stage. In previous years, the pilots slept under the same tent. However, in this case what is new is that the competitors have to sleep in a tent in a semi-marathon in stage 3 and in that case the bivouac is bigger. Twice in the same edition.
In fact, in stage 3 a video of Sébastien Loeb suffering at the opening of his store has already gone viral.with Carlos Sainz staring at his shop without really knowing how to open it.
In this case, each of the 7 bivouacs is smaller and has a minimum.
On the remaining days, when the competitors are in the usual bivouac, the favorites in all categories sleep in their own caravan (except Motul’s Original which rests in a tent). There are even caravans from some teams like the Monster Energy Honda Team that look more like a large apartment. Or the luxurious ones at Al-Rajhi, another level. However, in phase 3
