He was young, fit and an experienced mountain climber. But his love for the mountains now cost 27-year-old Philipp P. his life. The man from Innviertel (Upper Austria) died of treacherous altitude sickness while attempting to climb Africa’s highest mountain. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this at the request of the “Krone”.
“We are all stunned. I am very good friends with the family. It is an incredible drama,” Daniela Probst, the mayor of the small Innviertel community of Schwand im Innkreis, fights back tears as she talks about Philipp P.
Problems with takeoff
The 27-year-old had left for Tanzania with two friends the week before to climb Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. But the Innviertel resident started having problems as soon as he climbed the nearly 6,000-meter-high mountain and fell ill with altitude sickness.
Death in hospital
Philipp P. became increasingly worse until a rescue helicopter was finally called. But nothing helped; de Innviertler died on Tuesday in a hospital in Tanzania.
There is great sadness in Schwand. “Philipp was a wonderful person who was active in the fire brigade and did a lot of volunteer work,” the mayor mourns. The family is currently organizing the return of the body.
