The Galician Gabriel Marcelli He will be finishing his third year at Repsol Honda Trial Team where he studies alongside the legend Tony Bou. His goal and ambition should be to defeat the master: “I have the level to fight with Toni for victory and fight in the general classification.” 2023 was complicated by a knee injury that still persists, but he finished third in the Test GP and in the X-Trial after Toni Bou and Jaime Busto. Teaming up with them at the Trial of Nations, he won the team’s unofficial world championship.
“I am very happy with how the 2023 season ended: in the last tests I was very close to victory. It was a very positive season, where I competed at a very high level and, despite the injury, I managed to be consistent and regularly. Now that I’m better physically, I think in 2024 I can take another step,” said the Galician in an interview facilitated by his team.
“One of the things we can improve for 2024 is my physique, that I don’t have injuries and I can have better preparation with more time on the bike. Last year, I had tests that I almost didn’t have training, so I made a mistake because I wasn’t strong enough. I know that, if I hadn’t suffered that injury, the overall position in the championship would have changed. So I hope to be first in this new season,” said Marcelli.
It’s your third year with the Repsol Honda Trial Team and the pressure is increasing: “2022 is my first year and I hardly feel any pressure, but in 2023 some results are being asked of me, and even the weather has been very difficult . Well , we want more. For this 2024, I notice that the expectations are high… I know that not being on the podium in any event can be considered a bad result. I would even say that there are few thirds place. So nothing, we have to do it “I did well in all the tests to try not to get off the podium and try to be as far as possible.”
Working with Toni Bou
Gabri is the most advanced disciple of the 34-time world champion Tony Bou and this is how he talks about the ‘Master’: “Working with Toni is easy because he never hesitates when it comes to giving advice. He is very humble and hardworking, he always wants to train, and if he does it with other pilots, so much the better. We train a lot together and it helps me a lot to evolve and become a better driver every year. Ultimately, having him as a teammate and as your first goal challenges you and lets you know that steps are possible. Plus, the bike is the same, so I have no reason not to do what he has achieved. Obviously, it’s a motivation for me to be his teammate.”
And the goals for 2024 are clear: “to win both indoor and outdoor world championships, win the Spanish Championship and at the end of the season take the runner-up position in both disciplines. These are ambitious goals, but I think they are realistic . I have the level to fight Toni for success and winning events, which will make me achieve the goal of runner-up and, why not, maybe a world championship.”
