The Boston Marathon, one of the ‘big six’ along with Tokyo, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York, will have a Kenyan among the key figures of its next edition. Evans Chebet and to the Ethiopian Sisay Lemmawho will compete for a place at the top of the podium.
The oldest famous marathon in the world celebrates its 128th edition on April 15 and has announced the list of elite athletes, in which the Swiss Paralympic athlete also stands out. Marcel Hugsix times winner of the event.
“The professional men’s field features athletes from 28 countries and combines a mix of Boston veterans and newcomers,” said Jack Fleming, president of the Boston Athletic Association. “We look forward to great competition in the Open, Wheelchair and Para Athletics divisions.”
Two ‘heavyweights’ of the marathon
Chebet and Lemma are two of the best marathoners in the world.
The 35-year-old Kenyan has a personal best 2:03:00 and won some of the most important marathons on the planet such as in Valencia (2020), New York (2022) and Boston twice (2022 and 2023). In his last involvement in the ‘intellectual city’, He lost to none other than his compatriot Eliud Kipchogewho started as favorite and finished in sixth position.
“Boston has become my second home,” Chebet said. “Even after running 28 marathons during my career, the chance to run 29th in Boston and the fans gives me the necessary motivation to defend my title,” he added.
Lemma, for his part, just won the Valencia Marathon with a meteoric mark of 2:01:48test record, placing it as the fourth fastest man in history by far. The Ethiopian also won the London Marathon (2021) and came third in Berlin (2019) and Tokyo (2020).
The men’s team is completed with other notable names such as Tanzanian record holder Gabriel Geay, Kenyans Joshua Belet, Ronald Korir and Cyprian Kotut and Ethiopians Haftu Teklu and Shura Kitata.
