LIV Golf announced a series of improvements to its format on Thursday ahead of this week’s season-opening event in Mexico, with the circuit expanding courses and changes to the way points and prize money are awarded.
Funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), the breakaway circuit failed to finalize a partnership agreement with the PGA Tour before the Dec. 31 deadline, but negotiations are continuing.
Tyrrell Hatton is the latest big name to join LIV Golf, with the Englishman signing up for an expansion team led by the Masters champion Jon Rahm and making his debut in the season-opening event at El Camaleón golf course in Mayakoba.
LIV will organize 14 events this season with 13 teams of four golfers and two Wild Card players competing. The first season of the circuit had 48 players. Golfers who finish in the top 24 in the end-of-season rankings earn a spot for 2025, and those 25 through 48 must be re-signed by their team or choose another to compete.
The remaining players were relegated from the league but qualified for ‘Promotions Tournament’ of LIV. For the ‘Team Championship’, the three best scores will now count for the first two rounds, while the four points will advance to the third and final round. The team with the lowest cumulative score will be crowned champion and win $3 million for the event.
