Rafa Nadal has a very clear idea about where he stands in his form and career. Close to 36, on June 3, and with an incurable injury to his left foot that is increasingly unable to cope because the severity of the pain is sometimes unbearable, every day is a gift to be happy.
“I am very aware that it could be my last game at Roland Garros every time. And it could be Tuesday’s against Novak Djokovic. I hope not, but at this point in my career it could happen,” he reflects.
The chronically injured foot may not go away for weeks or months. To speak of years would be reckless. “Physically at the muscular level and tiredness I’m fine. We don’t know what can happen down there”, he meant in relation to the battered joint and the response the next day after four hours and twenty minutes to beat Felix Auger -Aliassime of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6 and 6-3.
“I know my truth and I accept it. And it is better to have another rival than Djokovic with confidence after winning in Roma, which added nine consecutive wins. But in sport everything is possible and Roland Garros is special to me. I will try to give myself a chance to reach the level I need, “he said.
“He was the favorite, as happened in 2015. The rest of the time (7-2 in his favor in this tournament) I was only a little so or we were at fifty percent,” he says.
It’s on Tuesday, probably in the evening, though “I’d rather play during the day.”
