Ons Jabeur will be the Global Ambassador of the UN World Food Program

Tunisian tennis player Ounce Jabeurformer world number two and one of the most talked about tennis champions today, was accepted to be a Global Goodwill Ambassador of the World Food Program (WFP)this entity announced today.

“Recognized for his athletic prowess and commitment to social causes, Jabeur will use his influential voice to raise awareness about global food insecurity and support our mission to end hunger,” he said.

WFP is the largest logistical and humanitarian arm of the United Nations system and serving the most vulnerable populations, affected or at risk of hunger in situations of crisis, conflict or disaster.

Ons Jabeur has been the first Arab woman to reach three Grand Slam finals and reach a very high world ranking.

“He will defend the equal access to healthy foods and the adoption of measures to solve the root causes of hunger that affect vulnerable communities around the world,” added the humanitarian organization, about what it expects from the new role of Jabeur, who throughout his career has shown of a willingness to act in favor of altruistic causes beyond the fields of tennis.

“An ounce contains a spirit of resistance and determination which fits perfectly with WFP’s mission and values,” said its executive director Cindy McCain.

Quoted in the statement, Jabeur considers it an honor to be involved in the work of WFP and noted that as an athlete he understands the importance of nutrition, especially for children, and hopes to contribute effectively to his mission.

Jabeur is involved in several initiatives, including one dedicated to the Gaza emergency and a fundraising campaign in the month of Ramadan.

This appointment comes as WFP faces a difficult global context, with high levels of acute hunger and international funding falling short of growing needs.
