Olympic hurdler Teresa Errandonea quits athletics: “I have to close this phase”

The Olympic hurdler from Irun Teresa Errandonea has decided to abandon the top level of athletics after months of struggling with various problems, including an Achilles tendon injury that prevents him from training to the maximum.

Errandonea announced this Thursday the end of his elite sporting career in a press conference organized by Basque Team in San Sebastián, where he was accompanied by the director of Physical Activity and Sports of the Basque Government, Gorka Iturriagathe coordinator of the Basque Team, Olatz Legarzathe president of the Basque Athletics Federation, Juan José Anderezand his last coach, with whom he managed to qualify for the Tokyo 2021 games, Ramon Cid.


The Gipuzkoan athlete tried to prepare to compete this summer in Olympic Games in Pariswhich was his second game, but the discomfort in his Achilles tendon weakened his physical and emotional state, so he decided to abandon the competition.

“The decision was not easy, but I don’t feel good. I have to close this stage to move forward,” explained the Irundan athlete. five times absolute champion of Spain in the 100 meter hurdles (2019 and 2021) and in the 60 meter hurdles indoors (2013, 2020, 2021).

He said that, after leaving top-level athletics, at the age of 29 he decided to focus on other aspects of his life.

He thanked for the support received during these years of his career, where he began training Susana Ferreira and then for 15 years with Muñoz bird at Bidasoa Atlético Taldea (BAT), the club where he developed his entire career.

In 2018 he began training with Ramón Cid, under the colors of BAT, and began the definitive departure that brought him to games in tokyo.

“I want to thank my family, my friends, my club and coaches, my teammates and all the sponsors and institutions that have been by my side all these years,” emphasized Errandonea.
