The American cyclist Magnus Sheffield (Ineos), witness the fall that cost him his lifeSwiss Gino Mader (Bahrain Victorious) on June 23, 2023 at Back to Switzerlandhe said he was “very lucky to be alive.”
Sheffield (Pittsford, 21 years old) also suffered a fall on the same descent as Mader, in Albula Pass, when they were descending at a speed of about 90 km/hour.
“Eight months later, and the wound of that fatal accident has not yet healed in memory,” he declared in an Ineos blog to remember “how fragile life is” and the “incredible fortune to be alive.”
“The accident reminded me how fragile life is. I feel incredibly lucky to be alive, able to walk and even more fortunate to continue competing professionally. This time or even at the beginning of Touring Britain in 2023“When I came back, I felt like I started a new chapter in my career and in my life,” Sheffield said.
The American runner from the day of the accident remembers seeing doctors treating a runner from Bahrain on the road, but he doesn’t know who it is.
“Unfortunately I just ran Mr. Mader several times. “I was told he was an incredible man and my thoughts remain with his family and friends,” he said.
Sheffield spent about three months cycling after the accident, when he returned home to the United States to spend time with his family. Missed the Tour de France which has to run the first time, and return tol Travel to Britain in September.
“A lot of people asked me if I was going to continue. In the time I was at home, I went through a lot of photos and memories. I felt very appreciative of all the good messages from people in the cycling world, but from also to many unknowns,” he explained.
He added that he now has a “deep sense of wanting to win again” and hopes to aim for a WorldTour stage race this season.
“ANDl Tour of Flanders It’s one of the toughest races on the calendar and a podium finish is vital for anyone’s record. “It’s an incredibly dynamic test that I dream of winning one day,” he concluded.
