In Peru, the police also rely on original special operations in the fight against drug crime: in the capital Lima, a police officer caught two female dealers on Tuesday with an alleged expression of love in a teddy bear costume (see video above).
To lure one of the drug dealers out of the house, an undercover police officer dressed as a cuddly giant teddy bear got down on one knee in front of the woman’s house with a heart-shaped balloon and a box of chocolates in his hands. He also carried a sign that read: “Eres mi razon para sonreir” (“You are my reason to smile”).
Giant teddy bear overwhelms surprised dealer
When the woman stepped out of the house, the romantic display of love and sentimentality was suddenly over: the surprised dealer was overwhelmed by the giant teddy bear and pushed to the ground before being arrested by other police officers watching in the background.
The drug raid was captured on video. The video footage shows how the police officers find a lot of drugs under a mattress and in a drainpipe in front of the building and how a second suspicious woman is also taken away and put in a police car.
Hundreds of packages of drugs found
Detectives were able to seize hundreds of packages of cocaine and marijuana. The police officer in the bear costume also showed heart at the station, comforting one of the two arrested women who was crying in despair by hugging her.
Peru is one of the largest producers of cocaine
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Peru is the second largest producer of coca leaves in the world and also the second largest producer of cocaine in the world, according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The drug is mainly smuggled to the US and Europe.
