Nyland earned his stripes at Sevilla

Norwegian goalkeeper Örjan Nyland was the star of Sevilla’s scoreline on Saturday at the Mestalla. The Nordic goalkeeper kept his clean sheet with decisive interventions, notably two against Yaremchuk in the first half from close range and a one-on-one in the second.

Nyland returns security to the team after a muscle injury between his thigh and hip sidelined him for a long period of time, particularly since the beginning of November. He missed 9 League games for this reason, 3 in the Cup and 3 in the Champions League.

In Girona he was on the bench, but the Serbian Dmitrovic still defended the starting goal, which showed a significant drop in performance that took a lot of confidence from the team. Along with Nyland, who reappeared against Osasuna, Sevilla are unbeaten in the last four games, in which they added 8 points that caused Quique Sánchez Flores’ team to temporarily escape the relegation zone, whose positions are 7 points away. Furthermore, Sevilla have kept a clean sheet in the last two games in a row, something Sevilla have not achieved in six months.

The signing of Nyland, an international for Norway, was a low-profile bet by Víctor Orta after the sale of Bono to Saudi Al Nassr last summer for 21 million euros. The veteran goalkeeper, 33 years old, has barely played in recent years, neither for Leipzig, his previous club, nor for the Premier teams he played for, Reading, Norwich, Bournemouth or Aston Villa. However, his performance convinced him at Nervión, which earned him a place and the starting position ahead of Dmitrovic despite the fact that he came in theory as a second course.

His excellent striking with both legs and a good reading of the continuity kick that led to goals from his teammates on the counterattack did much to respect him. Furthermore, his aerial prowess offers peace of mind and confidence in defence, which has improved him.

All this means that Sevilla is thinking about renewing his contract and improving his financial values, in addition to extending its duration, since it will end in 2025.
